Albania is
leading this Wednesday one of the most important sessions in the United Nations
Security Council. It is the head of the Albanian government, Edi Rama, who is
the Chief Executive at the Security Council’s table where the focus are the
consequences of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Prime Minister Edi Rama said during the conference that this will be a very important meeting in support of Ukraine. He said that helping Ukraine defend itself today gives assurances to those seeking peace and cooperation while warning those seeking conflict.
“This meeting is timely and is also necessary to share ideas and thoughts on the best way to use every opportunity for peace, a peace based on the Charter of the United Nations and the resolutions adopted by United Nations General Assembly.
Helping Ukraine defend itself today by stopping Russia, sends the best and fairest message to anyone considering embarking on a similar adventure tomorrow.
It gives assurance to those who seek peace and cooperation, it warns those who dream of conflict and confrontation, since if aggression were to succeed it would signal the end of the world, the end of the inviolability of borders.
We will use this meeting to call on Russia to restart the Black Sea
wheat initiative for the sake of those hundreds of millions who seek help for
food and for their lives from the United Nations,” said Albanian Prime
Minister, Edi Rama.
Ukraine’s
issue has clashed in the Security Council, the Russian delegation with the
Albanian prime minister and the reason for this is the presence of the
Ukrainian president.
It was the
representative of the Russian delegation who asked Prime Minister Rama the
procedure by which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was invited to speak
at the Security Council.
Albanian
Prime Minister responded by bringing other similar cases, where certain heads
of state have taken the floor at the meeting of open debates of the Security
Council.
Russia’s
representative has intervened so that the Ukrainian president does not take the
floor in the Security Council, while Rama has turned to him by addressing him
that Zelenskyy will not speak only if Russia stops the war.
During the
debate with Prime Minister Rama, the Russian envoy warned Albanian PM with the
claim that the Albanian presidency has opened debates, as it is allowing the
president of Ukraine to speak in front of the UN member states, and this will
have consequences.
“We do not believe that the arguments presented to us are convincing. You must explain to us why the president of Ukraine was given priority.
However, this has nothing to do with the procedure. The president of Somalia spoke first, but was the only president present. I would like to warn that if today, you will make decisions by dropping the hammer, then the Albanian presidency will face a practice of obvious violation of the practices of the security council.
I guess
the rules don’t apply to you. We do not oppose the presence of the
president of Ukraine in this meeting, but he should speak after the member
countries”, said the Russian representative.
