The G20 group adopted a consensus declaration at a summit on Saturday that
avoided condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine but called on all states not
to use force to grab territory. Kyiv is not entirely happy with the outcome.
However, European countries such as Germany and the U.K. boast that this kind
of consensus was what they were aiming for.
According to Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, the declaration was “nothing to be proud of”, adding that a Ukrainian presence would have given participants a better understanding of the situation.
However,
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the declaration demonstrated a clear
position on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by saying that the territorial
integrity of countries cannot be called into question with violence.
“So for me,
overall, a very successful summit with good results that went further than
many had feared it wouldn't beforehand. And for me therefore this was a good
day,” Scholz said.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the declaration had “very strong
language about Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine… I think that is a good and
strong outcome.”
India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said China, Russia’s main
major ally, was also supportive of the outcome.
“Differing viewpoints and interests were at play, but we were able to find
common ground on all issues,” the foreign minister stated.
