The EU
foreign ministers have expressed their unanimous support for an immediate
ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors in Gaza, where the civilian
population is suffering from the ongoing conflict.
This was stated by the Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg on Monday, after a meeting of the 27 EU countries in Brussels.
He also said that the foreign ministers
discussed the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Schallenberg
emphasized that the ceasefire is a matter of urgency and that Israel, like any
other country, has to respect international humanitarian law and avoid civilian
casualties. He added that the EU is ready to provide more assistance to Gaza,
which is facing a “catastrophic situation” according to the EU’s foreign policy
chief Josep Borrell.
Borrell
also reiterated that the EU supports a two-state solution and that the question
of what should happen after the war needs to be addressed. He said that the EU
will work with the UN, the US, and other partners to achieve a lasting peace in
the region.
