In a recent
letter from Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos
Mitsotakis, the United States has outlined plans to sell up to 40 F-35 jets to
Greece and gift the country various defense equipment.
The move comes in the wake of the US State Department's approval of the long-delayed sale of F-16 warplanes to Türkiye, coordinated with Ankara's support for Sweden's NATO membership.
Blinken's
letter emphasized the shared interests between the US and Greece in promoting
international peace and security. As part of the agreement, Greece is set to
receive two C-130H aircraft, 10 engines for P-3 aircraft, and 60 Bradley
infantry fighting vehicles as a gift from the US.
The F-35
Lightning II, a family of fifth-generation stealth multirole fighters, is
designed for diverse roles, including ground-attack, reconnaissance, and air
defense.
With three
main variants (F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C) catering to different takeoff and
landing requirements, the F-35 program involves international collaboration and
has faced controversies related to costs and delays.
The sale of
F-35 jets is expected to bolster Greece's defense capabilities in the evolving
geopolitical landscape.
