Albanian
Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is currently in New York, USA, attending the
High-Level Week of the 78th Session of the United Nations General
Assembly, held a meeting with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
Albania has begun implementing the agreement signed with the United Kingdom regarding the transfer of Albanian prisoners located in the UK.
The
agreement officially came into effect following its signing by Prime Minister
Edi Rama and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in December 2022. Subsequent
discussions between the two leaders in London in March 2023 further solidified
this cooperation.
Since the
joint statement made by the two Prime Ministers in December 2022, the United
Kingdom and Albania have continued to strengthen their partnership.
During this
period, there has been a significant reduction by 90% in the number of Albanian
citizens attempting illegal travel to the United Kingdom compared to the
previous year.
The
Albanian delegation at the UN is led by President Bajram Begaj, and it includes
Prime Minister Edi Rama and Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli
Hasani.
Albania has
held a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council since January 2022,
marking a historic milestone for the country. This two-year term will come to
an end in December of this year.
