Yerevan, represented by its representation in the Collective Security
Treaty Organization (CSTO), for the first time publicly refused the assistance
offered by this organization.
CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov, at a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, said that the Armenian side expressed its reluctance to accept help from the CSTO, and even asked to exclude the relevant document from the agenda.
“The
Armenian side, despite the fact that all other allies supported this decision,
did not show any interest in this document. Moreover, at the final stage of
work on the document, they asked to remove it from the agenda altogether.”, -
said Tasmagambetov to the Russian media.
Tasmagambetov
emphasized that this turn of events came as a surprise, given that the other
CSTO members supported the idea of assistance to Armenia.
This step
by Yerevan demonstrates a change in its approach to interaction with the CSTO
and, possibly, a revision of the country’s foreign policy strategy.
The reasons for this decision by the Armenian
side remain unknown, but it will certainly cause discussions both within the
country and among its international partners.
